My research focuses on the taxonomy of the Tribe Senecioneae (Asteraceae), particularly the genus Senecio and its segregates.  I have recently been involved in producing treatments for the Flora of North America, San Juan Basin Flora Project in the Four Corners Region and for the upcoming 2nd Edition of the Jepson Manual, Higher Plants of California.

I am also heavily involved with the Flora of North America project, which is a comprehensive systematic account of all of the plant species in North America north of Mexico.  The flora will appear in 30 volumes, 15 of which are already published.  I am currently serving as a Taxon Editor for the family Rhamnaceae, Lead Editor for volume 18, and author for several treatments in the families Asteraceae, Ericaceae, Saxifragaceae and Fabaceae.

In addition to these responsibilities, I am currently serving as a Member-At-Large on the board of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC).  In 2011, CAS will be hosting a joint of meeting of SPNHC and the Natural Science Collections Allliance.  I am serving as the chair of the host committee for that event.

Other interests include:

- the databasing of herbarium collections, and exploring various ways in which the data from herbarium collections could be used.

- vegetational history, biogeography, invasive species

- how we teach biology/botany at the undergraduate level
