Staff Research Associate II & III

• Planned and conducted experiments; interpreted results and organized data for projects including routine genotyping of human leukemic samples, granulocyte/monocyte colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) hypersensitivity screening, and minimal residual disease (MRD) detection using TaqMAMA.

• Developed and implemented new assays for the laboratory including TaqMAMA for MRD detection, sequencing on the ABI 3100 for routine in-house genotyping, Taqman SNP genotyping for allele detection and the long-term culture-initiating cell assay.

• Acted as laboratory contact person and liaison between Environmental Health and Safety and 20+ laboratory members, responded to safety audit reports and kept up to date radioactivity records.

• Maintained, provided training and performed troubleshooting on diverse instruments and software, especially the ABI 7900 Real Time PCR Instrument, ABI 3100 Sequencer, and Sequencher 4.6.

California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, CA. February 2009 - Present

Molecular Laboratory Volunteer and part-time Laboratory Assistant

• Extracted DNA and performed cycle sequencing to investigate the phylogenetic relationships of Nebria beetles.

• Assisted in laboratory maintenance, including bi-monthly billing for laboratory users.

University of California, San Francisco, San Francisco, CA. August 2003 - April 2005

Staff Research Associate I & II

• Processed Escherichia coli samples including storage preparation, isolation of genomic DNA, PCR amplification of target genes, and automated sequencing of PCR products.

• Synthesized, purified and analyzed custom oligonucleotides for core facility, trained new employees and interacted with customers for delivery and troubleshooting.

• Performed routine maintenance and troubleshooting of robots, DNA synthesizers and HPLC machines.

• Reviewed and complied with routine laboratory audits as Laboratory Safety Officer.

• Maintained synthesis records, machine maintenance records, customer order forms and oligonucleotide analytical reports; ordered reagents and set up standing order to keep laboratory stocked.

• Performed duties related to DNA sequencing service including preparing DNA templates, pipetting DNA sequencing reactions, operating the ABI 3700 DNA sequencer, data analysis and customer service.

• Assisted in Taqman Quantitative PCR service including pipetting 384-well reaction plates, operating the ABI 7900 Taqman machine and delivering data to customers.

Mystic Aquarium, Mystic, CT. Fall 2000, 2001, 2002, Spring 2003

Animal Husbandry/Stranding/Laboratory Volunteer

• Prepared food, fed whales, participated in animal training and cleaned backstage area.

• Assisted with routine physicals and restraint for stranded seals.

• Measured pH, salinity, ORP, iodide, magnesium, aluminum and nitrate of water samples from tanks; recorded data in Excel spreadsheets.

Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species, Escondido, CA . Summer 2002

Bonner Summer College Fellow

• Reviewed literature on the phylogenetic relationships of New World monkeys.

• Extracted, PCR amplified and sequenced DNA from frozen tissue samples of New World monkeys.

• Aligned and analyzed sequences using PAUP 4.0b9.
