Geology Collections

Welcome to the
California Academy of Sciences
Geology Collections Database Search Page

The Geology Collections at the Academy include four main collections: Fossils, Diatoms, Minerals, and Meteorites.  This page offers links to search any one of these collections, described in more detail below.

 Fossil Collection

The online Fossil database contains data for primary types and vouchers, and currently also for certain categories of specimens, such as fish and trilobites. Photographs are available for many of the types and some other specimens.  NOTE: We do not currently make the entire collection available online. The collection is very large and specimens are being cataloged all the time.   If you do not find any records for a species or taxon in which you are interested, please feel free to send an email to Senior Collections Manager Jean Demouthe (JDemouthe at calacademy.org).

> Search Fossil Collection.

Diatom Collection

The online Diatom database contains data for primary types and the entire diatoms collection. Photographs are available for many, but not all, of the type specimens.

Mineral Collection

The mineral collection includes about 25,000 specimens from all over the world.  This database is currently under construction and will include minerals, gems, and other worked specimens.  Contact Senior Collections Manager Jean Demouthe (JDemouthe at calacademy.org) to inquire about any specimen or species in which you are interested. No photographs are available currently.
