Winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize, along with longtime collaborator Dr. Michael Bishop, for their groundbreaking research into the genetic basis of cancer, Harold Varmus was also the Director of the National Institutes of Health during the Clinton administration. Dr. Varmus sought to increase public access to scientific papers and co-founded the Public Library of Science, a nonprofit, open-access publisher. He continues to be a vocal advocate for science in the public forum and in government policy-making. He is the 2010 Claire Matzger Lilienthal Distinguished Lecturer.
