Research:
Anthropologists
explore the past and present diversity of humans and human culture.
At the California Academy of Sciences, members of the Department
of Anthropology conduct research, assist in the development
of a variety of public programs and maintain an extensive collection
of cultural objects from all over the world. Research is carried
out in the fields of Physical Anthropology, Ethnography, and
Folklore.
Curator and Irvine Chair Zeray Alemseged undertakes research on early hominin and primate phylogeny and taxonomy, the origin and evolution
of bipedalism, ontogeny and development in early hominins, hominin
behavior and "social structure," early hominin dietary adaptation, biogeography and geological settings, and hominin paleoenvironments and paleoecology. Click here for more information.

Collection Researcher Joseph Evans undertakes research on

The
Department of Anthropology has produced a wide variety of

Subjects range from human evolution to material culture, including
