Research:

Anthropologists explore the past and present diversity of humans and human culture. At the California Academy of Sciences, members of the Department of Anthropology conduct research, assist in the development of a variety of public programs and maintain an extensive collection of cultural objects from all over the world. Research is carried out in the fields of Physical Anthropology, Ethnography, and Folklore.

    Curator and Irvine Chair Zeray Alemseged undertakes research on early hominin and primate phylogeny and taxonomy, the origin and evolution of bipedalism, ontogeny and development in early hominins, hominin behavior and "social structure," early hominin dietary adaptation, biogeography and geological settings, and hominin paleoenvironments and paleoecology.     Senior Collection Manager Russell Hartman conducts ethnographic research related to the department's collection. Click here for more information.

    Rietz Collection Researcher Joseph Evans undertakes research on the department's Rietz Collection of Food Technology, thanks to a a generous grant from the Rietz Food Technology Foundation. For more information on the Rietz Collection, click here.

Publications:

The Department of Anthropology has produced a wide variety of published books. Subjects range from human evolution to material culture, including the proceedings of the Department's biennial Wattis Symposium and published catalogs of our collection.
