My research focuses on the taxonomy of the Tribe Senecioneae (Asteraceae), particularly the genus Senecio and its segregates. I have recently been involved in producing treatments for the Flora of North America, San Juan Basin Flora Project in the Four Corners Region and for the upcoming 2nd Edition of the Jepson Manual, Higher Plants of California.

Other interests include:

-the databasing of herbarium collections, and in exploring various ways in which the data from herbarium collections could be used.

-vegetational history, biogeography, invasive species

-how we teach biology/botany at the undergraduate level
