Lihua Zhou has worked for CAS since 2003. Lihua's duties include management
of all the botanical aspects of the Academy's Biodiversity Inventory Project
of the Gaoligong Shan Region of Yunnan Province,
China. She will also continue her taxomonic research in the taxa of her
interest.
SUMMARY OF RESEARCH WORK:
Much of her research has concentrated on the family Rosaceae, and in this
family she published a new genus, Pleiosorbus along with Professor
C. Y. Wu of the Kunming Institute of Botany. In the Rosaceae she has also
studied the Chinese endemic genus Dichotomanthes which is one of
the key genera in the phylogeny of the family. This study included an
analysis of the systematic position of Dichotomanthes in relation
to other genera in all subfamilies of Rosaceae by means of morphology,
anatomy, embryology, floral developmental morphology, palynology, cytology,
and cladistics. She has also undertaken a taxonomic revision of part of
Cotoneaster, taxonomically a notoriously difficult genus due to
apomixis. This study included observations from herbarium specimens,
plant in the field, as well as from cytology, palynology, and leaf epidermis
micromorphology. As a result of these studies a taxonomic revisions was
done on the section Alpigeni and section (pro.subsect.) Adpressi.
In addition to her work in the Rosaceae, Lihua is the author of the families
Agavaceae and Basellaceae for the Flora of Yunnan. She was also
the senior author of the genera Silene and Arenaria in the
treatment of Caryophyllaceae for the Flora of China. She has published
on the taxonomic position of Camellia reticulata in relation to
its related species.
