Until recently (Albert 2001 [ref. 25614]), this monotypic genus was placed in it's own family, Electrophoridae. •Valid as Electrophorus Gill 1864 -- (Triques 1993:123 [ref. 22107], Mago-Leccia 1994:57 [ref. 21320], Albert & Campos-da-Paz 1998:424 [ref. 23853], Albert 2001:56 [ref. 25614] and moved to Gymnotidae, Crampton et al. 2003:2 [ref. 27064], Campos-da-Paz in Reis et al. 2003:483 [ref. 27061], Tagliacollo et al. 2016:27 [ref. 34087] in Gymnotidae, Ferraris et al. 2017:[16] [ref. 35236], de Santana et al. 2019:1 [ref. 36958], Craig et al. 2019:19 [ref. 37060]).
