Paralectotypes: RMNH D1971 (1, stuffed), D2414 (1, stuffed), 3179b-e (4, stuffed); ZMB 4114 [ex RMNH] (1). Type catalog: Paepke 2001:331 [ref. 25566]. Lectotype selected by Boeseman 1947:170 [ref. 12876]. •Valid as Plecoglossus altivelis, subspecies altivelis (Temminck & Schlegel 1846) -- (Zhang et al, 2016:187 [ref. 34477], Sonoyama et al. 2020:23 [ref. 37637]). •Valid as Plecoglossus altivelis (Temminck & Schlegel 1846) -- (Kuroda 1953:274 [ref. 39545], Dyldin et al. 2020:99 [ref. 37569], Kim et al. 2020:63 [ref. 39118]). Current status: Valid as Plecoglossus altivelis (Temminck & Schlegel 1846). Plecoglossidae. Distribution: East Asia: mainland Japan, Peninsula of Korea, northern Vietnam. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.

chinensis, Plecoglossus altivelis Wu [Y.-F.] & Shan [X.-J.] in Shan, Wu & Kang 2005:63, Fig. 1 [Journal of Ocean University of China v. 4 (no. 1); ref. 28360] Baisha River, Qingdao, Shandong Province, China. Holotype: OUC 79803030. Paratypes: 131 specimens at OUC. •Synonym of Plecoglossus altivelis (Temminck & Schlegel 1846), but a valid subspecies chinensis Wu & Shan 2005 as described. •Valid as Plecoglossus altivelis (Richardson 1846) -- (Kottelat 2013:268 [ref. 32989]). •Valid as Plecoglossus altivilus, subspecies chinensis Wu & Shan 2005 -- (Zhang et al. 2016:187 [ref. 34477]). Current status: Synonym of Plecoglossus altivelis (Temminck & Schlegel 1846). Plecoglossidae. Distribution: China and Taiwan [China subspecies]. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.

ryukyuensis, Plecoglossus altivelis Nishida [M.] 1988:236, Fig. 1 [Japanese Journal of Ichthyology v. 35 (no. 3); ref. 12742] Sumiyo River, Amami-oshima Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan, 27°16.0'N, 129°24.5'E. Holotype: URM-P18462. Paratypes: URM-P18463-64 (24, 31). •Synonym of Plecoglossus altivelis (Temminck & Schlegel 1846), but a valid subspecies ryukyensis Nishida 1988 as described -- (Kawanabe & Mizuno 1989:80 [ref. 25598], Sawashi & Nishida 1994:253 [ref. 22345], Nakabo 2000:297 [ref. 25086], Sakai et al. 2001:88 [ref. 25693], Nakabo 2002:297 [ref. 26001], Shan et al. 2005:61 [ref. 28360]). Current status: Synonym of Plecoglossus altivelis (Temminck & Schlegel 1846). Plecoglossidae. Distribution: Ryukyu Islands [subspecies]. Habitat: freshwater.
