Syntypes and/or Bleeker specimens: (8) BMNH 1866.5.2.178 (1), RMNH 7013 (1), 10322 (3). Type catalog: Bertin & Estève 1948:28 [ref. 19574]. Name later spelled schwanefeldii by Bleeker and authors (named after H. W. Schwanefeld, but this name was misprinted in the article). Species epithet spelled schwanefeldi by Maxwell 1921:89 [ref. 30344]. Distribution: Southeast Asia: Malaya (Malaysia), Java, Sumatra and southern Borneo (Kalimantan, Indonesia), Mekong River basin, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Introduced in Iberian Peninsula, Italy and Hong Kong (China). Habitat: freshwater.
