velifer, Acanthurus Bloch [M. E.] 1795:106, Pl. 427 (fig. 1) [Naturgeschichte der ausländischen Fische v. 9; ref. 464] No locality [India, Indian Ocean]. Holotype (unique): ZMB 1753. Type catalog: Paepke 1999:41 [ref. 24282]. On p. 106 of Bloch's Ichthyologie, v. 12 [ref. 21381]. Tranquebar given as locality in Bloch & Schneider 1801:214 [ref. 471]. Most authors currently use veliferum, but the correct spelling should be Zebrasoma velifer -- see Art. 31.2.2 of the Code. Kottelat (2013) lists the species, but he spells it veliferum but correctly cites it as a noun in apposition (which would be velifer). Spelled velifex by Bringham 1902 (not researched). Kottelat (2013) cites an inland record from the Philippines. •Valid as Zebrasoma veliferum (Bloch 1795) -- (Dor 1984:256 [ref. 29757], Kishimoto in Masuda et al. 1984:230 [ref. 6441], Randall 1986:818 [ref. 5706], Allen & Swainston 1988:140 [ref. 25477], Randall et al. 1990:429 [ref. 15987], Kuiter 1993:374 [ref. 23929], Goren & Dor 1994:68 [ref. 25356], Mohsin & Ambak 1996:561 [ref. 27969], Allen 1997:224 [ref. 23977], Chen et al. 1997:152 [ref. 26476], Kuiter 1997:368 [ref. 25488], Randall et al. 1997:429 [ref. 25919], Myers 1999:273 [ref. 23965], Johnson 1999:750 [ref. 25471], Randall 1999:28 [ref. 25829], Allen 2000:94 [ref. 37268], Randall in Randall & Lim 2000:642 [ref. 25122], Nakabo 2000:1323 [ref. 25182], Laboute & Grandperrin 2000:430 [ref. 25191], Sadovy & Cornish 2000:260 [ref. 25480], Allen 2000:123 [ref. 25868], Hutchins 2001:270 [ref. 25841], Hutchins 2001:45 [ref. 25847], Kuiter & Debelius 2001:84 [ref. 26232], Randall 2001:3683 [ref. 26301] dated 1797, Nakabo 2002:1323 [ref. 26193], Allen & Adrim 2003:63 [ref. 26830] dated 1797, Myers & Donaldson 2003:647 [ref. 27495], Matsuura et al. in Kimura & Matsuura 2003:207 [ref. 27510], Lobel & Lobel 2004:77 [ref. 27576] dated 1797, Randall et al. 2004:30 [ref. 27624] dated 1797, Heemstra & Heemstra 2004:405 [ref. 28072], Randall 2005:589 [ref. 28239], Mundy 2005:497 [ref. 28379], Allen et al. 2006:1744 [ref. 29094], Randall 2007:432 [ref. 30952], Motomura et al. 2010:229 [ref. 31256], Kottelat 2013:444 [ref. 32989], Koeda et al. 2016:105 [ref. 35333], Koeda et al. 2016:18 [ref. 35354], Bernardi et al. 2018:3 [ref. 36114], Hoschke et al. 2019:160 [ref. 36626]). •Valid as Zebrasoma velifer (Bloch 1795) -- (Fricke 1999:553 [ref. 24106], Fricke et al. 2009:110 [ref. 30213], Allen & Erdmann 2012:1036 [ref. 31980], Fricke et al. 2013:271 [ref. 32706], Fricke et al. 2014:186 [ref. 33932], Delrieu-Trottin et al. 2015:8 [ref. 33988], Fricke et al. 2018:357 [ref. 35805], Fricke et al. 2019:306 [ref. 36673], Fujiwara et al. 2020:38 [ref. 38631], Durville et al. 2021:315 [ref. 38802]).
