Long recognized as valid, but threatened by Labrus puncatatus Linnaeus 1758 as shown by Paepke 1993 [ref. 20914]. Opinion 1954 in June 2000 removed that threat, and P. schomburgkii is to be given precedence over the name Labrus punctatus whenever the two names are considered synonyms.
