Authorship follows Fricke 1994:17 [ref. 21827]. Neotype designated by Fricke 1994:347 [ref. 21827]. Based on description in manuscript by Forster (Johann Reinhold Forster, 1729-1798, German explorer and naturalist of Cook's second voyage). •Valid as Forsterygion varium (Forster 1801) -- (Hardy 1989:494 [ref. 12485], Paulin et al. 1989:220 [ref. 24556], Paulin & Roberts 1992:94 [ref. 24625], Fricke 1994:341 [ref. 21827], Fricke 1997:574 [ref. 23339], Jawad & Clements 2004:89 [ref. 27725], Hoese 2006:1523 [ref. 28998], Jawad 2008:2955 [ref. 29958] with Schneider as author, Gomon 2008:686 [ref. 30616], Fricke 2009:45 [ref. 30394], Patzner et al. 2009:446 [ref. 30396], Feary et al. 2009:1704 [ref. 30938], Stewart & Clements 2015:1510 [ref. 34299]). Current status: Valid as Forsterygion varium (Forster 1801). Tripterygiidae: Tripterygiinae. Distribution: Southwestern Pacific: New Zealand region; introduced in Tasmania, Australia. Habitat: marine.
