Based on a fish that was illustrated then discarded. •Valid as Aulopus purpurissatus Richardson 1843 -- (Paxton et al. 1989:227 [ref. 12442], Parin & Kotlyar 1989:407 [ref. 12748], Kuiter 1993:39 [ref. 23929], Gomon et al. 1994:264 [ref. 22532], Kuiter 1997:36 [ref. 25488], Thompson 1998:50 [ref. 23291], Paxton & Niem 1999:1920 [ref. 24746], Hutchins 2001:20 [ref. 25847], Matsunuma et al. 2008:76 [ref. 30901], Davis 2010:454 [ref. 37081], Gomon et al. 2013:141 [ref. 33017]). •Valid as Latropiscis purpurissatus (Richardson 1843) -- (Gomon & Yearsley 2008:257 [ref. 30631], Hoschke et al. 2019:154 [ref. 36626], Balushkin & Prirodina 2020:16 [ref. 37828]). Current status: Valid as Latropiscis purpurissatus (Richardson 1843). Aulopidae. Distribution: Southeastern Indian Ocean, southwestern Pacific: Queensland to southern Australia and to Western Australia. Habitat: marine.
