Lectotype selected by Eccles & Trewavas 1989:59 [ref. 13547]. •Valid as Protomelas insignis (Trewavas 1935) -- (Eccles & Trewavas 1989:58 [ref. 13547], Maréchal 1991:388 [ref. 20944], Oliver 2012:48 [ref., 32111], Konings 2016:270 [ref. 34521], Dierickx & Snoeks 2020:10 [ref. 37605]). Current status: Valid as Protomelas insignis (Trewavas 1935). Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae. Distribution: Eastern Africa: Lake Malawi. Habitat: freshwater.
