Holotype (unique): UMB 164 [RK UMB 4562]. Type catalog: Wahlert 1955:326 [ref. 21527]. Species later illustrated and described in detail in Steindachner 1900:491 Pl. 3 (fig. 2) [ref. 14892]; on p. 9 of separate. •Valid as Dendrochirus barberi (Steindachner 1900) -- (Eschmeyer & Randall 1975:275 [ref. 6389], Mandrytsa 2001:276 [ref. 25636], Mundy 2005:324 [ref. 28379], Randall 2007:171 [ref. 30952], Matsunuma & Motomura 2013:5 [ref. 32776], Matsunuma et al. 2017:[7] [ref. 35277], Matsunuma & Motomura 2019:[27] [ref. 36536]). Current status: Valid as Dendrochirus barberi (Steindachner 1900). Scorpaenidae: Pteroinae. Distribution: Central Pacific: Johnston Atoll and Hawaiian Islands. Habitat: marine.
