rueppelliae, Dalophis McClelland [J.] 1844:213 [Calcutta Journal of Natural History v. 5 (no. 18); ref. 2928] Red Sea. Lectotype: SMF 151. Paralectotypes: SMF 7346 (1). Type catalog: Böhlke & Smith 2002:145 [ref. 26380]. The spelling rueppelliae apparently is acceptable; early workers almost certainly Latinized the name first (Art. 31.1.1) [WNE, 12 Mar. 2012] -- we suggest using rueppelliae (not following Böhlke & Smith 2002:145 [ref. 26380]), see also Kullander 2016:94-95 [ref. 34436]. Lectotype established by Böhlke 1982:44 [ref. 26388], and by Randall & Golani 1995:868 [ref. 21744]. •Valid as Lycodontis rueppelliae (McClelland 1844) -- (Dor 1984:29 [ref. 29757]). •Valid as Gymnothorax ruppelliae (McClelland 1844) -- (Hatooka in Masuda et al. 1984:23 [ref. 6441], Castle & McCosker 1986:173 [ref. 5645], Paxton et al. 1989:131 [ref. 12442], Winterbottom et al. 1989:9 [ref. 13251], Randall et al. 1990:40 [ref. 15987] as ruppelliae, Chen et al. 1994:53 [ref. 22258], Goren & Dor 1994:7 [ref. 25356], Quéro & Saldanha 1995:67 [ref. 22017], Randall & Golani 1995:867 [ref. 21744], Allen 1997:54 [ref. 23977], Grove & Lavenberg 1997:155 [ref. 24023] [but see McCosker 1998:810 [ref. 24025]], Randall et al. 1997:40 [ref. 25919], Myers 1999:50 [ref. 23965], Fricke 1999:52 [ref. 24106], Böhlke et al. 1999:1657 [ref. 24692], Allen 2000:84 [ref. 37268] as rueppeliae, Böhlke & Randall 2000:255 [ref. 24493], Nakabo 2000:205 [ref. 25086], Compagno in Randall & Lim 2000:585 [ref. 25122], Randall & Earle 2000:7 [ref. 25806], Böhlke & McCosker 2001:73 [ref. 25226], Hutchins 2001:17 [ref. 25847], Nakabo 2002:205 [ref. 26001], Allen & Adrim 2003:23 [ref. 26830], Manilo & Bogorodsky 2003:S95 [ref. 27377], Myers & Donaldson 2003:611 [ref. 27495], Hatooka 2003:7 [ref. 27558], Lobel & Lobel 2004:68 [ref. 27576] as ruppelliae, Mundy 2005:123 [ref. 28379], Zhang et al. 2010:270 [ref. 31511] as rueppelliae). •Valid as Gymnothorax rueppellii (McClelland 1844) -- (Böhlke & Smith 2002:145 [ref. 26380], Randall et al. 2004:7 [ref. 27624], Randall 2005:40 [ref. 28239], Randall 2005:47 [ref. 28239], Allen et al. 2006:256 [ref. 29005], Randall 2007:92 [ref. 30952], Fricke et al. 2009:17 [ref. 30213], Imamura 2009:20 [ref. 30434], Fricke et al. 2011:351 [ref. 31242], Allen & Erdmann 2012:93 [ref. 31980] as ruppelii, Smith 2012:27 [ref. 32155], Fricke et al. 2013:251 [ref. 32706], Fricke et al. 2014:20 [ref. 33932], Delrieu-Trottin et al. 2015:4 [ref. 33988], Ho et al. 2015:161 [ref. 34130], Fricke et al. 2018:39 [ref. 35805], Golani & Fricke 2018:23 [ref. 36273], Arndt & Fricke 2019:24 [ref. 36883], Fricke et al. 2019:52 [ref. 36673] as rueppellii, Smith et al. 2019:57 [ref. 37159], Ramos-Castro et al. 2021:519 [ref. 38842], Eudeline 2022:144 [ref. 39191], Smith & Böhlke 2022:64 [ref. 39681], Allen & Erdmann 2024:104 [ref. 40796]).
