Catalog of Fishes -- 19 September 2008 (replaces 29 August 2008 version)

It appears that 2008 will be another important year for new fish taxa, with over 300 new species recorded by the beginning of August 2008. We continue to replace most abbreviations with full names, such as in distribution and locality fields.

Progress has been made on 3 research resources:

Species of Fishes by family/subfamily. Prepared by Eschmeyer and Fong -- The second presentation includes some modifications in the classification. Total valid taxa reflect new taxa added minus taxa moved into synonymy plus taxa moved to valid.

Ichthyological collections -- Those mentioned in the main Catalog of Fishes database, especially as repositories of type specimens. This database will be posted before or with the next version this winter. Besides museum names and abbreviations, this will include WWW sites, cross-referencing of abbreviations, and selection of museums by country. Fricke and Eschmeyer.

Ichthyological journals and book titles -- There are over 3200 individual journals or non-journal titles in the Catalog of Fishes database. We are assembling full citations to these. Fricke and Eschmeyer.

How to cite the Catalog of Fishes: As previously suggested, if you use the Catalog to check spellings, authorships, dates of publication and related items, and/or as a source of recent publications, please consider mentioning this in your methods or include a citation in your literature cite as: Eschmeyer, W.N. (ed.) Catalog of Fishes electronic version (updated 29 August 2008). or http://www.calacademy.org/research/ichthyology/catalog/fishcatsearch.html (FishBase no longer provides a repackaged version).

Acknowledgments for this version: Special thanks are to Ron Fricke for general assistance, and to Jon Fong and Stan Blum for computer support and advice on technical matters. CAS continues to provide funds to cover expenses. We are grateful to the many journals that have or are moving to open access. Also, the WWW site of Michal Miksik and Erwin Schraml (www.worldfish.de) is an excellent source for new taxa. Michal Miksik, Erwin Schraml and Stefan Koerber also assist us in finding new references. Dennis Polack continues to find errors and discrepancies in the database. James Maclaine (BMNH) continues his discovery of “missing” types at the BMNH, and forwards new finds on a regular basis. Many others made a special effort to assist with this version: Erik Ĺhlander, Eric Anderson, Bill Anderson, Nicolas Bailly and FishBase, Christian Betancur, Heiko Bleher, Rossella Bulla, William Bussing, Pablo Calvinő, Kent Carpenter and Costa Rica workshop staff, Dave Catania, Bruce Collette, Wilson Costa, Eddy Derijst, Carl Ferraris, Tilman Fischer, Sabine Petri, Steven Grant, Elaine Heemstra, Hans Ho, Mysi Hoang, Tomio Iwamoto, Zeehan Jaafar, Maurice Kottelat, Bernard Kramer, Peter Last, Nathan Lujan, Javier Maldanado O., Ed Matheson, George Mattox, Kris Murphy, Tom Near, Joe Nelson, H.
