Concerned about science education during COVID? We've got your class covered!

Eligibility

The Rock Fund Program is open to all kindergarten - 5th grade classes from San Francisco schools, including public, private and parochial.

Our goal is to connect and support all students, teachers and schools in science education in a way that students can see that science and nature is for them, and how it is relevant to their lives and communities.

September - December 2020 FREE Live Online Programs

In lieu of in-person field trips during this fall semester, we have devised a menu of live online programs. Read through the options below, then fill out the application for your free program. We will fit you into one of your top choices.

We will release a plan for Spring semester 2021 at a later date.

Kindergarten - 2nd Grade Webinars:

Each webinar is a 30-minute lesson, taught by professional educators, and broadcast to multiple classes at the same time. Kinesthetic movement is included during each lesson. Teachers receive a web link to the broadcast and get an optional activity to do before or after the program. These options are great for classes who may meet asynchronously because links of the recordings will be shared.

3rd - 5th Grade Interactive Webinar Series:

Each webinar series consists of three weekly consecutive sessions in one month. Each live session is a 30-minute lesson, taught by a team of professional educators, and broadcast to multiple classes at the same time. Students will interact with the educators through polls, chat box and hands-on activities. Teachers will receive optional extension activities for students to do in between each webinar. These options are great for classes who may meet asynchronously because links of the recordings will be shared.

3-part Series: Life in a Museum (September 9 - 24, 2020) Students will notice, wonder, sketch and think deeply while exploring what and who makes up our museum. More info to come soon!

3-part Series: Spooktacular Science (October 6 - 22, 2020) Which do you find most spooky - bugs, bones or guts? Can you think of why each of these are important to study? During this science unit we will focus on each of these topics to solve a larger mystery of a decomposing skull found by scientists.More info here.

3-part Series: Coastal Redwoods (November 3 - 19, 2020) More information will be released about this series soon. Sessions will likely explore how redwoods trees are able to grow so large and live for so long compared to other tree species.

3-part Series: Night Sky Explorations (November 6 - 20, 2020) More information will be released about this soon. Sessions will include planetarium visualizations, and tips for viewing the night sky and its meteor showers in December.

3-part Series: Tis the Season for Science (December 1 - 17, 2020) More information will be released about this soon. Topics will likely include seasonal birds and their migrations in San Francisco Bay, and comparing that to the seasonal migrations and adaptations of reindeer.

Kindergarten - 5th Grade: Individualized One-Time Virtual Programs

These options are prioritized for SPED/ inclusion classes, newcomer classes, and/or for classes taught primarily in languages other than English or Spanish. If your class does not have one of these classifications, but you think it would be best for your students, you are still encouraged to apply and we will do our best to fit you in.

Each program is 30-minutes long and taught by a professional educator who converses directly with your students via webcam and microphone. Students will also interact with educators through polls, chat box and hands-on activities, as age appropriate. Teachers receive a private link ahead of time to share with their students. Generally we use Zoom with classes, but we may be open to other videoconferencing platforms.

These programs are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 10:00am, 11:00am, and 1:00pm.
