Secret Life of a Museum Macaw
© Mats Lindh
On May 20th and 21st, Academy biologists will give 2nd-3rd grade students the scoop on what it's like to live at the Academy—if you are a Blue and Gold Macaw, that is!
*Due to high demand for this program and limited capacity to have our Macaws on camera, we would greatly appreciate combining classes at your school into one room so you can share a registration.*
We offer multiple sessions of this free event to serve various bell schedules and time zones.
Dates: Select Wednesday, May 20 or Thursday, May 21
Time: 9:10am PT (12:10pm ET)
Duration: 30 minutes
Target Audience: 2nd-3rd grade
The California Academy of Sciences is home to over 63,000 living animals. Together we will discover the secret lives of one of these animals, Blue and Gold Macaws.
In this 30-minute program, Academy Biologists will give 2nd-3rd grade students an exclusive look at what it takes to care for these animals. We will watch the macaws eat their favorite snack and observe the different body parts they use. Maybe we will get to hear them too!
Together, we will learn how Academy biologists train the macaws and why this training is so important.
To participate, you must have the following technology available:
- Desktop, laptop computer, or tablet
- Strong internet connection; a wired connection is preferable
- Free Zoom videoconferencing software installed in advance
I'm new to Distance Learning from the Academy. What is a Special Live Event?
A Special Live Event is a live, interactive virtual learning experience connecting many classrooms around the world with Academy educators, all sharing a single chatroom. Your students will be able to watch and participate in activities during this live streaming event, but will not be on camera and will not talk directly to us using a microphone. Instead, your class will have the opportunity to submit thoughts, observations, and questions via a chat box.
Is there a cost?
Special Live Events are free for all participating! However, you must register in advance in order to get the link to the shared chatroom. Many events fill to capacity.
Who can participate?
Special Live Events are designed for student groups, and are tailored to specific grade ranges. You may be located anywhere on the globe to participate over an internet connection, but note that we deliver programs during the day in the Pacific Time Zone.
Do I need to download anything to connect?
Yes. We use Zoom videoconferencing software to connect. You will need to download this free software before the day of the event.
Will I receive a confirmation email?
Once you submit your registration form, you will receive an email with a copy of your registration. This is your confirmation email. Two weeks before the event, you will receive a prep document and information on how to connect with us.
Can the date/time of Special Live Events be adjusted?
No, these events are predetermined by our educators' and/or special guests' schedules. We offer repeated sessions for each event, often on sequential dates, in order to serve various academic calenders, bell schedules, and time zones.
I registered for an event, but now I'd prefer one of the other available sessions. Can I switch my date/time for the event?
Simply email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to make any adjustments to your registration, and we'll do our best to fit you in.
My class isn't able to join any of the currently scheduled Special Live Events. Do you have other Distance Learning opportunities?
Yes! You may schedule a private session for a small fee. We have a menu of Virtual Programs for K-8 classrooms. Your students will be able to talk directly with educators using a web camera and microphone. Availability is limited due to our educators' teaching calendar; submit your request in advance!
