Tidy-tips Layia platyglossa (Asteraceae)
One look at this striking flower with its orderly coloring explains the name. The outer "petals" are actually ray flowers with three-lobed ligules. The color change between the yellow and white areas is amazingly crisp, even under magnification. The purple-black anthers in the disk flowers contribute to this floral artistry which rivals a Matisse.
DISTRIBUTION: Common in many habitats of the Calif. Floristic Province from NW Calif. and the Great Central Valley to SW Calif.; < 2000 m.
