Superfluous substitute name for Pseudauliscus A. Schmidt 1875.Leuduger-Fortmorel 1879, p. 64, wrote (translated from the French):"Pseudauliscus Leuduger-Fortmorel n.g...This genus is for the first time mentioned by Mr. A. Schmidt, in Atlas der Diatomaceen Kunde, pl. 32. f. 28 and 29; he does not give a description of it. From the ones I am presenting, they are circular discs...etc." He explicitly included 3 new species, P. nebulosus, P. debyi, P. tetiti.. The two species included by Schmidt (P. peruvianus and P. radiatus) are also implicitly included by Leuduger-Fortmorel by his reference to Schmidt 1875. Leuduger-Fortmorel believes he is validating Pseudauliscus A. Schmidt, we believe, however, that the genus name was validly published by Schmidt. If Pseudauliscus is validly published by Schmidt 1875, and we believe it is, Pseudauliscus Leuduger-Fortmorel is a superfluous name, typified with the type of Pseudauliscus Schmidt (P. peruvianus or P. radiatus) in accordance to Art. 7.5. Pseudauliscus Leuduger Fortmorel would be legitimate only if Pseudauliscus Schmidt is declared invalidly published. The type could then be chosen among the 5 species explicitly and implicitly included by Leuduger-Formorel, and Boyer's typification with P. debyi (see Boyer 1927, p. 96, ref. 000155) would be followed. |
