The following papers are excess duplicates to the National Museums reprint files. In an effort to have this research information in the hands of researchers we are offering these papers free of charge but ask that you would, if possible, send us copies of your entomological research papers. These papers are offered on a first come first serve basis. There could be anywhere from one to a couple hundred copies available of a given paper. So please let me hear from you!

CANDIDATES FOR ENDANGERED SPECIES (U.S.A.)

by David Bowles

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

The most recent publication of the candidate/endangered liste (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 1994) shows eight species of Neuroptera. They are:

Myrmeleontidae - Distoleon (=Eidoleon) perjerus - Molokai antlion (Hawaii)

Hemerobiidae    - Micromus cookeorum - Cooke's brown lacewing (Hawaii)

                         - Micromus lobipennis - Lobe-winged brown lacewing (Hawaii)

                         - Micromus swezeyi - Swezey's brown lacewing (Hawaii)

                         - Pseudopsectra usingeri - Usinger's brown lacewing (Hawaii)

Chrysopidae     - Nothochrysa californica - San Francisco lacewing (California)

Ithonidae         - Oliarces clara - cheese-weed moth lacewing (Arizona, California)

Most of the candidate neuropterans occur in Hawaii with two other species occurring in California and one in Arizona. All are Category 2 species, or those for which listing is possibly appropriate, but for which persuasive data on biological vulnerability and threat are not currently available to support proposed rules. Most states have a natural heritage and/or endangered species program that receive "Section 6" funds from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for doing research on endangered, threatened, and candidate species. If you are interested in such work, either on Neuroptera or other invertebrate groups, you should contact the appropriate offices in the states or region of interest for information on research priorities, grant preparation and deadlines for submission. In Texas, we have found that many of the candidate invertebrate species listed by the Fish & Wildlife Service are not deserving of such status either because they are more abundant and widely distributed than previously thought, or the species are synonyms of more common species.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. 1994. Endangered and threatened wildlife and plants; animal candidate review for listing as endangered or threatened species; proposed rule. Federal Register 59(219): 58982-59028.

RETIREMENT - DR. OLIVER S. FLINT, JR.

It has been brought to my attention that "Ollie" officially retired from the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. in December, 1994. He has had a long and very distinguished career studying aquatic insects, and most neuropterists will be most familiar with his work on Megaloptera. He has described three new species of North American Sialidae, the South American genus Nothochauliodes, a new species of Costa Rican Chloronia, as well as revisions of Neohermes, Chloronia, and Platyneuromus, among other accomplishments.

However, Ollie continues to come into the office on a daily basis, and now freed from bureaucratic drudgery we will probably see many more fine publications eminating from the desk of Oliver S. Flint, Jr.

CONGRATULATIONS

Dr. John D. Oswald has just accepted a position as Systematic Entomologist in the Department of Entomology at Texas A. & M. University at College Station. He will begin work at this distinguished institution beginning June 1. It is not easy getting a systematics position at U.S. universities these days and John is to be congratulated on being selected from a very prestigious field of candidates.

BIBLIOGRAPHY ON-LINE

John Oswald's world bibliography of neuropteroid publications is now available for anyone to use through the California Academy of Sciences electronic gopher. Each reference has a unique number, and this list is expected to be useful in citing confusing publications, such as the multitude of Navás papers in a given year.

GOPHER SERVER IS ON LINE

It contains information about the staff, resources available to visitors, newsletters maintained by staff members, information about the collections and a growing directory of entomologists of the world. The information has been compiled by NMNH staff as well as staff of various associated organizations located at the National Museum of Natural History, including the USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory, the Walter Reed Biosystematic Unite and the Maryland Center for Systematic Entomology at the University of Maryland. The information contained in these files should be viewed with caution, this is an evolving product that will be edited, upgraded and expanded over time.

The NMNH Entomology Gopher is located at nmnhgoph.si.edu and is reached through Gopher client software. World-Wide Web users with MOSAIC or other WWW client software can access this information at URL http://nmnhwww.si.edu/nmnhweb.html via the National Museum of Natural History home page.
