Animal Images

SFBay:2K focuses on the bottom dwelling animals (the benthic fauna). Carefully documented and preserved, samples of every type of animal that we encounter constitute the results of our boat- and shore-based collecting. Academy staff, SFBay:2K participants, and visiting experts work together to provide up-to-date identifications of these animals, and help to add this information to Academy databases. These data can help us not only to record the distributions of Bay species, but to track and even reveal new instances of invasive species that can threaten the health of the Bay. Some of these species are illustrated in this part of our website.
