This native anomuran can be distinguished from Pachycheles rudis by the dense covering of hair on the chelae (claws) as well as by some characteristics of the abdominal region. P. pubescens is common on the outer coast and can occasionally be found among dock fouling in areas near the mouth of the bay, such as San Francisco Marina, from which this specimen was collected.
