Ghost Wings / Barbara M. Joosse. San Francisco,
CA: Chronicle Books, 2001.
Monarch butterflies and celebrations for the Day of the
Dead feature prominently in this touching story. Narrated by a child who spends
a great deal of time with her best friend, Grandmother, the story follows them
through daily life and their love of the monarch butterflies that winter near
their home in Mexico. When Grandmother dies, it seems like the narrator will
never be happy again, but Day of the Dead celebrations, and the return of the
butterflies, cause her to remember Grandmother with love, not grief.
