The Abstract Wild
/ Jack Turner. Tucson, AZ: The University of Arizona Press, 1996.
In
his eight essays in The Abstract Wild, Turner discusses how abstractions
have removed us from nature. Rationalizations about "saving a little"
wilderness has turned wilderness into a manufactured entertainment. Wildness
has been removed from wilderness, and how can we understand, appreciate, and
conserve nature without an understanding of what it actually is?
The passion that Turner displays
in his writing is palpable. Notes and a bibliography are included.

The Hidden Forest:
The Biography of an Ecosystem / Jon R. Luoma. New York: Henry Holt and
Company, 1999.
Central
Oregon houses a unique and hidden environment. The Andrew's Experimental Forest
is a portion of a larger forest,
the Willamette National Forest, set aside by the government in 1948 for scientific
research. The 16,000 acre old-growth forest has been growing undisturbed since
before European settlers encountered the "New World." The author examines
this unique ecosystem, and introduces you to the forest and the scientists who
research there. While informative, the text is very readable and it provides
a fascinating account of a valuable scientific and natural location.
Selected readings and an index are included.

The Importance of
Species: Perspectives on Expendibility and Triage / Edited by Peter
Kareiva and Simon A. Levin. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 2003.
Conservation
efforts and economics rarely have
the same goals. Limited money available for conservation leaves some people
to wonder where it is best concentrated. Most conservationists and biologists
take an area as a whole, but this particular series of bound essays addresses
individual species. Sometimes, is it enough to save one and let another become
extinct? Should an effort be made to identify key species within an ecosystem
so that conservation can be focused on them?
Seventeen individually authored articles are gathered in this work. Each somehow
addresses the worth of individual species. Extensive references and an index
are provided.

The Real Environmental
Crisis: Why Poverty, Not Affluence, is the Environment's Number One Enemy /
Jack M. Hollander. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 2003.
The
author, Professor Emeritus of Energy and Resources at the University of California,
Berkeley, believes that the largest danger to the environment is poverty. Many
environmental issues have their
roots in, or are exacerbated by, poverty. Over population, pollution, and land
degradation are just three areas of concern that Hollander believes can be lessened
with a reduction in poverty. The book examines environmental and resource issues
with an eye to technological and economic development, presenting cogent arguments
in favor of combining environmentalism and poverty reduction.
Notes and an index are provided.

/ David R. Brower and Alexis Petrovitch. Berkeley, CA: Berkeley Hills
Books, 2000.
Imagine
that the Earth as we know it today was created

Beautifully colorful illustrations highlight the story.
