Animal Minds: Beyond Cognition to Consciousness / Donald R. Griffin. Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press, 2002.

Are animals aware? Can they think and feel as humans understand thinking and feeling? These are just two of the questions that Griffin explores in this revised and updated edition of a classic book originally published in 1992. During the last decade, an explosion has occurred in research on animal mentality. The author examines the questions and controversies surrounding this research and its explosion, and argues for increased research in consciousness, not just cognition. His arguments take into account both philosophical and ethical questions.
Included in this volume are an extensive bibliography and an index.
