No Man's Garden: Thoreau
and a Vision for Civilization and Nature / Daniel B. Botkin. Washington,
D.C.: Island Press, 2001.
The
author, a research professor in the Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology Department
at the University of California at Santa Barbara, has put together a work that
reexamines what we know about Henry David Thoreau.
Moving on from the theory that Thoreau was a hermit, the book presents him as
a man before his time - interested in nature, comfortable with science, and
particularly aware of the spiritual feelings that people have about nature.
From there, Botkin applies what he has learned of Thoreau to the current environmental
and ecological problems that we face today. Without an understanding of why
we feel the way we do about nature, we cannot change our policies that deal
with it.

endnotes and an index are provided.

Of Moths and Men:
An Evolutionary Tale: The Untold Story of Science and the Peppered Moth /
Judith Hooper. New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 2001.
Every
person who ever took high school biology knows the story of the peppered moth
in England, held up as the proof of Darwin's theory of natural selection.
For the last 50 years this evidence has been held up as the defining confirmation
of natural selection, but recent examination of the sciene behind the proof
has shown something something unexpected. Hooper examines the people, science,
and society surrounding the famous peppered moth discoveries in a readable and
and entertaining format. Intrigue, science, theory, and heartbreak are all intermingled
into a fascination story.

Ancient Creature of
the Deep. Boston, MA: WGBH Video, 2003.
The coelacanth is a wonder.
Believed to be extinct for more than 50 million years, this living fossil was
"rediscovered" in 1938 off the coast of South Africa. As recently
as 1997, a new subspecies was discovered by a marine biologist casually strolling
through a fish market in Indonesia. These chance encounters led to a scientific
discovery that provides clues to evolution and thrills the adventurer in all
of us. In this 60 minute video we learn about the rediscovery of the fish, as
well as follow a team of divers in a submersible on their attempt to videotape
this amazing creature.
