Faraway Drums / Vriginia Kroll. Boston; New York: Little, Brown and Company, 1998.
To comfort her younger sister, and herself, while they're alone in their urban environment, a girl uses her imagination to conjur images of Africa, just like in the stories her great-grandmother told her long ago. The sirens outside become monkeys in the trees, screaming brakes and a horn become elephants on the way to watering hole, and the pounding and thumping across the hall are the calls of Faraway Drums.
Although the situation is described and imaged realistically, the comforting ending breaks the tension created through the powerful words and images.
