Diving & Snorkeling
Australia's Great Barrier Reef / Len Zell. Melbourne, Australia; Oakland,
CA: Lonely Planet, 1999.
The Lonely Planet
books are useful, wonderful, easy to understand guides. This volume examines
the best sites in Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, the outer Coral Sea, and the
Torres Strait.
Great Barrier Reef Province covers 386,000 square miles. Within that space,
there are 400 species of coral, 2,000 species of fish, 4,000 mollusks, and breeding
spots for 6 of the world's 7 sea turtle species. Parts of the area are lush
rainforest, other parts are bare, some are home to birds, some are not. There
is obviously a great deal of diversity, which is why you need to look at this
book!
The guide takes you to the best sites and explains what you're likely to see
and the level of experience needed to see it. The dive sites are divided into
regions for ease of use, with specific information provided for each site, including
likely marine life. If you want to know about things to do when you're not in
the water, the guide can help with that, too. An overview of the area, "what-to-bring"
information, maps, and more are also provided. Don't forget to look at the beautiful
photographs to remind yourself why you're going, or at the hazardous marine
life to remind yourself to be careful!

Rogue Primate: An
Exploration of Human Domestication / John A. Livingston. Boulder, CO:
Roberts Rinehart, 1994.
The author, a Professor
Emeritus in the Environmental Studies graduate program and York University in
Ontario, Canada, presents a book that challenges our ideas about the relationship
between humans and the natural world. He argues that the first domesticated
animals were not cows or goats, dogs or sheep, but humans.
In becoming domesticated, the humans separated themselves from the natural world,
and began to rely on ideas and technology rather than natural cues. Their view
of other life was viewed through the view of themselves, and rationalization
became a large component of human life.
The book contains an index, notes by chapter, and a selected bibliography.

The Seaside Reader
/ Edited by Dery Bennett. New York, NY: Lyons & Burford, 1992.
The Seaside Reader is anthology of writings from naturalists, scientists, and fisherman. All of the selections have at least one tie in common -- the seacoast.
The selection by Rachel Carson, Winds Blowing Seaward, follows the travel of mullet through the channel, into the inlet, to the open sea. Following the wind and the tide, they seek to elude fisherman. Other works included are from Jacques Cousteau, Edward K. Ricketts and John Steinbeck, and John Updike.

The Trail Home: Essays
/ John Daniel. New York, NY: Pantheon Books, 1992.
Some of the essays in this
work have been seen previously in other publications, together, however, they
make a powerful statement about being closer to nature. The author observes
the forest, garden, mountains, and more, with ease to show how people can find
their way back to nature. From his own garden log to rock climbing in Yosemite
National Park, the author uses his experiences to draw larger comparisons to
