The first unit of the Morrison Planetarium's star projector is swung into place by Academy staff. Still the Planetarium's main instrument, the completed projector is 13 feet long, weighing approximately 5000 pounds, and projects a field of 3800 stars. Our star projector is not a Zeiss, Spitz, Minolta, Goto, or any other mass-produced planetarium instrument. It is one-of-a-kind, designed and constructed by the staff of the California Academy of Sciences, and is formally referred to as the "Academy Projector."
