Johnson 1984:465 [ref. 9681] placed this genus in Percoidei incertae sedis; Springer and Raasch 1995:94, 104 [ref. 25656] use the family name Lateolabracidae into which the genus is now placed; the name Paralabracinae Fowler 1907:249 [ref. 1376] was meant for Percolabrax but that lapsus not regarded as establishing a Percolabricinae. Also sometimes placed in Moronidae.
