unimaculatus, Hypsophrys Agassiz [L.] 1859:408 [Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History v. 6 (1856-1859); ref. 74] Syntypes: MZC (not found). The entire description of the genus and species is, "A second [genus], resembling Chrysophrys, he called Hypsophrys unimaculatus." Typically this would be regarded as not available, no distinguishing features provided (from Lake Nicaragua). The species unimaculatus has not been used as a senior synonym and Schmitter-Soto 2007:65 [ref. 29310] suggests conserving the younger name. Combined with a feminine genus, the original species epithet should have been unimaculata. •Kullander & Hartel 1997:200 [ref. 22732] treated as available and valid, but would continue to recognize the younger Hypsophrys nicaraguensis (Günther 1864) as the name to use. •Valid as Hypsophrys unimaculata Agassiz 1859 -- (Chakrabarty & Sparks 2007:61 [ref. 29184] as unimaculatus with nicaraguensis in synonymy). •Synonym of Hypsophrys nicaraguensis (Günther 1864) -- (Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:637 [ref. 27061], Schmitter-Soto 2007:64 [ref. 29310], Říčan et al. 2016:34 [ref. 34357]). Current status: Synonym of Hypsophrys nicaraguensis (Günther 1864). Cichlidae: Cichlinae. Habitat: freshwater.
