P.] 1944:324, Fig. 44 [Proceedings of the United States National Museum v. 95 (no. 3181); ref. 3960] Trujillo, Lake Maracaibo system (Río San Juan at bridge south of Mene Grande), Motatán system, Maracaibo Basin, Venezuela, ca. 9°44'46.82"N, 70°48'7.92"W, altitude 41 meters. Holotype: USNM 121369. Paratypes: USNM 121533 (3), 121359-68 (1, 1, 25, 11, 11, 41, 22, 134, 6, 107), 236037 [ex USNM 121366] (3, c&s). Type catalog: Vari & Howe 1991:22 [ref. 19022]. Accidentally omitted from 1998 publication; not the same as Astyanax venezuelae Schultz 1944. •Valid as Gephyrocharax venezuelae Schultz 1944 -- (Galvis et al. 1997:48 [ref. 23651], Weitzman in Reis et al. 2003:225 [ref. 27061], Vanegas-Ríos & Phillip 2013:1333 [ref. 34415], Thomaz et al. 2015: Add. 5 [ref. 33893], Vanegas-Ríos 2016:76 [ref. 34359], Vanegas-Ríos 2017:6 [ref. 35531], DoNascimiento et al. 2017:55 [ref. 35633], Ferreira et al. 2018:170 [ref. 35911]). Current status: Valid as Gephyrocharax venezuelae Schultz 1944. Characidae: Stevardiinae. Distribution: Tributaries of Lake Maracaibo basin, Venezuela and Colombia. Habitat: freshwater.
