Definition of Habitats Used in the CAS San Francisco Species Inventory Project 2000-2002

 

Foothills-a hilly region at the base of a mountain range.  There are usually grasslands or forests on the foothills.

 

Grasslands-an ecological community in which the characteristic of plants are grasses.

 

Wetlands/Estuary-lands or areas that are very moist or have a small body of water.

 

Redwood Forests-a forest that is all or mostly redwoods.

 

Deciduous Forests-made up primarily of trees that loose their leaves in the Fall and grow them back in the Spring.

 

Coniferous Forests-are made up primarily of trees that have long thin leaves called needles.  Firs, Spruces and Pines are all conifer trees.

 

Urban Forests-forests that are found living among an urban environment.

 

Urban-an environment that is made up of buildings concrete and people.

 

Inter-tidal-is the region that is between the low tide mark and the high tide mark.

 

Rocky Areas-habitats that are rocky.  They range from being on streambeds, to mountains, and even along coastal areas.

 

Sandy-a sandy environment is found usually along the coasts and waterways.
