Type designated by Jordan & Gilbert 1877:87 [ref. 4907] as Accipenser sterletus in error, first species mentioned is Accipenser serotimus. Jordan 1917:113 [ref. 2407] has Acipenser serotinus Rafinesque 1820 as type. Rafinesque's use of the spelling Accipenser for the subgenus is an unjustified emendation or misspelling.
