Holotype: NMNZ P.1951. Paratypes: MCZ 39714 (1); slides of upper and lower teeth of paratype are in NMNZ P.10650. Type catalog: Hardy 1990:6 [ref. 18942]. •Synonym of Etmopterus lucifer Jordan & Snyder 1902 -- (Compagno 1984:79 [ref. 6474] but as abernathyi, Last & Stevens 1994:82 [ref. 23873], Dyldin 2015:55 [ref. 34524]). •Valid as Etmopterus abernethyi Garrick 1957 -- (Ng et al. 2025:65 [ref. 41999]). Current status: Valid as Etmopterus abernethyi Garrick 1957. Etmopteridae. Distribution: Southeastern Indian Ocean, southwestern Pacific: southern Australia, Tasman Sea and New Zealand. Habitat: marine.
